What Is National Rebuilding Day?

National Rebuilding Day takes place on the last Saturday in April, this year it falls on April 30th. This day is centered around joining together as a community to help raise the living standards of vulnerable families. A vast majority of homes in the United States were built before 1980 and are regularly in need of repairs that low-income families cannot afford. Every year since 1973, volunteers have come together to provide the much-needed maintenance and upgrades for these houses.

How It Began

In 1973, a small group of people in Midland, Texas noticed a rising need in their community. It was brought to their attention when their neighbors could not afford to fix the repairs that their houses desperately needed. They decided that as a group, they would do whatever they could to help restore the neighborhood.  From then on, they volunteered their time and skills each April to rehabilitate homes in their community.

How It Continues

The news of these positive efforts spread slowly at first, but eventually grew to a national scale. Their goals expanded from providing service once a year in April for their local community to inspiring many across the country to take action in their own communities. In 1988, they became a non-profit organization known as Rebuild Together and have since been dedicated to improving years all year round. Each year the organization gets almost 100,000 volunteers who help complete around 10,000 projects across the country.
